Corsicana-Mildred will be hosting a basketball shoot-out June 9 and 10. The Mildred Shoot-out will provide both varsity and junior varsity divisions with a five game guarantee. The cost is $200 per team. All games will be played at Mildred High School which is 5 miles south of Corsicana. Date: May 12, 2012

Location: Gary High School

Cost: $150 per team

Divisions: Varsity and JV with 3 game guarantee

Registration Deadline: May 7

Rules: The game will be 20 minute halves with running clock. Halftime will be 5 minutes in length. The clock will stop with 1 minute left in each half if the game is within 10 points. Team fouls will be kept and free throws will be shot after 7 fouls. While the clock is running, it will be 1 shot for 2 or 3 points. When the clock is stopped, then all foul shots will be taken. Each team will be given 3 timeouts for the entire game. If overtime is required, then the first overtime period will be 2 minutes. If another period is required, then it will be sudden death.

Games could start as early as 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Tournament passes will be sold for $5 for adults and $3 for students. Please let your parents know this.

25-1A-II next year

When realignment came out, the story in 1A-II was how part of east Texas got moved into region 4, but also how UIL stacked 25-1A-II. Next year this district has 4 playoff teams plus Chireno, who wouldve been a playoff team in probably 90% of the other districts last year. Chireno did beat state ranked Stamford, was in the 1A-I region 2 regional tournament. So really you have 5 playoff caliber teams in 1 district. When you take a look at the all district and all region teams also, there is a lot of good players coming back next year. Of the top 5 teams in the district, it appears Laneville is actually losing the most. That should make this district very interesting next year. Of the top 5, how do you see this district playing out?

Top players in the region?

In the next week or so, TABC will be releasing their all region and all state teams. The all state team consists of 20 players which breaks down to usually 5 in each region. Sometimes if one region is stronger than others, they'll take more than 5. I was thinking of the best players in the region and jotted down some names that may help you with your list. I didnt get to see everyone play this year so I'm probably leaving some names off. Check out my list and give me your top 5-7 in region 3. Region 2 fans in east Texas can give me their region 2 list if they'd like. There are a few districts in 1A-II not in east Texas that I'm not familiar with, so I left them out. Although none of them fared very well in the playoffs. I also didnt list a 3A districts, like the Royal/Sealy district and Navasota district, and I may be leaving off someone good. So lets see your list, who do you think should make all state??

Should the UIL change the way they matchup the state tournament field?

It seems like every year you watch the state tournament on the first 2 days of semis and at least in one classification feel like you watched the 2 best teams play each other in the semifinals. To my knowledge, the UIL matches the teams up by taking the teams with the 2 best winning percentages and making them the 1 and 2 seed, then flipping a coin to see those 2 teams will play. My question is, is there a better way for the UIL to matchup the teams in the semifinals of the state tournament? I realize it shouldnt matter how they match them up because the best team should win every time. But I'd just like as a fan to see the best 2 teams play in the state championship game every time. Is the way UIL does it now the best way? In my opinion it isnt, because using record to seed teams isnt a good measure of who has been the best teams. You could play a weaker schedule and have a better record than another team, that doesnt mean you are better. So what is the alternative? What would be a better way? Could they seed them by their TABC ranking? How about fielding a committee of "experts" and let them decide? What do you think?
